Dover - On January 10, Governor Ruth Ann Minner will proclaim January Human Relations Awareness Month in Delaware.

"It is our duty to fight discrimination and raise awareness about the importance of equality in our communities for the betterment of our society," said Governor Minner. "With this proclamation, we are once again renewing our commitment to the promotion of fairness and equality in the treatment of all people in the First State."

The proclamation, signed by Gov. Minner and Lt. Gov. John Carney, affirms the state of Delaware's dedication to taking a leadership role in the elimination of all forms of discrimination and continuing to uphold, promote, and protect the human rights of every individual.

The proclamation will also honor the efforts of the State Human Relations Commission, which works to ensure equal opportunity for all Delawareans. In addition, the Commission promotes amicable relationships among the various racial, ethnic, religious, gender, social and cultural groups within the state and educates the community at large regarding discrimination of all types.

"While our differences in race, culture and National Origin enrich our Nation, they can also be a source of misunderstanding and conflict," said Juana Fuentes-Bowles, Director of the Delaware Department of State, Division of Human Relations. "Human Relations Awareness Month is one way to recognize that building relationships with diverse groups is even more important today than ever before."

Governor Minner will be presenting the proclamation to the members of the State Human Relations Commission at a 3 p.m. ceremony in Legislative Hall.
